But As A Soldier, For His Country by Stephen Goldin But As A Soldier, For His Country by Stephen Goldin Mar. 10, 2010 $1.99 5175 words Sample 50%
Author bio:
STEPHEN GOLDIN was born on February 28, 1947 in the city of Philadelphia. When he was 13, his parents moved to California and, upon reflection, he decided to accompany them. It was a lucky thing he did, too; otherwise, the commute to UCLA would have been quite difficult. He eventually graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy. His first job out of college was as a civilian space scientist for the U.S. Navy. The urge to write was strong, though, and after several years he left to try writing full time. He only regretted the move every other Thursday, when he would have gotten paid. After several years of genteel poverty, he took a job as writer/editor for a pornographic humor paper, the San Francisco Ball. In retrospect, this was a great crucible; because of deadline pressure, he had to learn to make his writing dirty, funny, and one draft. At about this time, too, he began selling novels on a regular basis. While he has, from time to time, held down other full-time employment (he helped design the Star Trek: The Next Generation computer game "A Final Unity" for Spectrum HoloByte and has also written manuals and game design documents for Maxis), his real love is fiction writing and he continues to pursue it. His first wife was fellow author Kathleen Sky. Their medieval-style wedding was a Saturday morning program item at the 1972 World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. In the 10+ years of their marriage, in addition to their individual works, they collaborated on a pair of stories ("Painting the Roses Red" and "The Devil Behind the Leaves") about the diMedicis, a family of interstellar swindlers. They also co-authored the highly successful nonfiction book, The Business of Being a Writer, based on a class they had taught at California State University at Northridge. Mr. Goldin's current wife is fellow author Mary Mason. Their wedding took place the night before EclectiCon 1 in Sacramento, at which Mr. Goldin was the Guest of Honor. They currently live in the San Francisco East Bay area. So far they have co-authored two books in the Rehumanization of Jade Darcy series: Jade Darcy and the Affair of Honor and Jade Darcy and the Zen Pirates. More books in this series are planned. Mr. Goldin served SFWA for close to three years as editor of the SFWA Bulletin and another three years as SFWA's Western Regional Director.

Michael Barnette grew up in the wilds of Miami, Florida where he enjoyed the nightlife and wide variety of cultures, but not the late night driveby shootings. Deciding on a change of pace, Michael moved to Athens, Georgia where he lived for several years before migrating west. He misses the ethnic food in Miami, he doesn’t miss the driveby shootings. The last two years he was in Miami, Michael went from being a poet to writing short stories. One of the short stories he wrote, Zoner, was also the first gay erotica he’d ever written. Set in his cyberpunk world setting--which takes place in a future variant of Miami--and using characters established from an unfinished novel he was working on, he submitted the story to Circlet Press. The story was published and has been well received in the gay community, garnering a Gaylactic Spectrum Award nomination in 2003, while the anthology, Wired Hard #3, was a finalist for the Lamda Literary award that same year. He has since been nominated for the Gaylactic Spectrum Award five more times, both for novels and short stories. Seeing the popularity of erotica-- and finding it much easier to sell than poetry-- Michael changed his writing focus in 2003 and started researching the types of erotica popular with readers. The rest, as they say, is history. You can visit Michael and find out about his worlds at the following places on the net.

The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love: A Blueprint for World Peace by Kaushal Aras The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love: A Blueprint for World Peace by Kaushal Aras Mar. 08, 2010 Free! 7577 words Read a sample
Author bio:
“I envision a world where respect, listening, and trust are restored to the planet.”- Kaushal Aras A Message from Kaushal Aras I was inspired to write The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love based on a question I received at one of my workshops. I was asked if peace would ever be possible. My answer to this question was “Yes- when a critical mass of people around the world actively makes peace a priority.” Although this question has undoubtedly been asked many times before, at that very moment I was suddenly struck by the fact that people need a system to follow to become part of the solution. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is my contribution towards providing that blueprint for others. The book is about loving others unconditionally and giving for the sake of giving without expecting reward. It also offers practical guidelines that people can follow to spread this message to the people around them. One of my biggest inspirations for the message of peace is based on an experience that is very near and dear to my heart. Growing up in India, my relationship with my mother was a dynamic of love and hate. My feelings towards her caused a great deal of personal turmoil. When my arranged marriage failed in 2004, I blamed it all on my mother and did not speak to her for 9 months. I decided to excommunicate her from my life. This time was difficult for me, however, as I was feeling little joy and peace. One day I was at a bookstore and a picked up a book of poetry by Rumi. In front of me was the quote, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” I resolved in that moment that I would make peace with my mother. We had a heart to heart communication and told one another how much we loved each other. As a result of my deepened understanding of love, now my mother has become my new best friend. From this experience, I learned no matter how impossible a situation looks, you can always make peace with anyone anywhere and anytime. We need to open our hearts to love. My mission in life is to inspire people to live consciously with love and tolerance, and to contribute their unique gifts to the world. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is my way of contributing to the world. I am hoping people will join me in spreading this message of love for the goal of world peace. About the Author: Kaushal Aras is an acclaimed international presenter and writer. In March 2010, Kaushal Aras released his new book The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love. For this book, Aras draws upon ancient stories of love and gives them even more relevance for the modern day contemporary perspective. The core of the book explores seven different ways in which we relate to others with “extraordinary love.” When The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love was released, it was done so in an extraordinary manner that capitalized on the power of Internet book technology. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love was released as a free ereader book. The text of the book itself author encouraged readers to give it away to others. As a result, the Seven Symphonies soon became a global phenomenon as the message about this book spread virally. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is also available as a free ebook download. Unlike many free ebook downloads, The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is truly free with no strings attached. Therefore, no registration or email sign-up is necessary. History: Kaushal became interested in spirituality at a very young age. He traveled throughout India studying with various spiritual leaders. However, it was not until he met his master 'Sant Ajaib SinghJi' that his life's mission became clear to him. At that moment, he realized that he was here “to share the gift of Surat Shabd meditation and self realization to create a world of shanti (peace), ananda (bliss), & trupti (fulfillment).” Aras arrived to the United States with only $500 in his pocket. Since that time, he has earned and a Master’s in engineering management from Andrews University. He is also an alumnus or the executive management program from the University of Notre Dame. Aras also holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from MIT India. The Speaker and Trainer: Kaushal has been a community organizer, delivered transformational workshops, mentored students in entrepreneurship, and coached self-expression and leadership programs. He has led fundraisers for environmental and peace causes including the GP2 project. Aras founded the GuruKool Inspiration Institute, which offers meditation and self-realization to help people connect with their creativity, passion and leadership ability. Kaushal has delivered presentations to General Electric, Whirlpool Corporation, Parker Hannifin, and the Bank of National City, among others. Philanthropy: “Love is the thread that weaves us all together to experience the bliss of life.” –Kaushal Aras Kaushal Aras has organized charitable events for a variety of causes. One of the most recent events was the Bollywood Blowout. This event was organized by Aras to raise funds for a green expedition initiative to clean up two swirling masses of toxic plastic & garbage in the Pacific Ocean. The event was held at the Ideal Hotel in San Diego. Bollywood Blowout included Bollywood dancing performances by international artists, Indian cuisine and music, silent auction of fine art and services donated by sponsors, and cool door prizes. Author bio:
J. P. Moore is the author of TOOTHLESS,the genre-bending zombie podcast sensation--coming soon from from Dragon Moon Press! J. P. Moore writes in southern New Jersey, which is a long way from the settings of his novels and stories. He has fond memories of a childhood in the Pine Barrens, however, where endless tracks of mossy wilderness informed the spirit behind his fiction. Whether in worlds of his own design, or slightly off-center historical settings, Moore digs for the streams of mythology and folklore that run beneath day-to-day life. Pulling them forth, Moore makes prime motivations and manifest realities of these undercurrents. He finds his characters as bystanders and transforms them into heroes and heroines as they face horrific enemies. Perhaps no surprise, J. P. Moore is a student of speculative history. His library card unlocks a Best of the Best parade of works on King Arthur, the Knights Templar, Gnosticism and countless other mysteries from ancient and medieval history. His browser’s bookmarks lead to a mess of conspiracy theories that, in conglomeration, present a truly frightening world. Just the right kind of world for his characters, however--Moore’s settings are on the brink. Their histories are lost, or misunderstood. Their futures are uncertain. All of the heroes are gone. Only the unlikely heroes are left.

I've been a writer since I saw STAR WARS at twelve. First short stories, then movie scripts, and now books. I'm publishing my short stories to help understand ebooks and Smashwords better, and when I'm ready, I'll work my way to putting a book up here. I have a son who just turned one, and is way more fun than a monkey on a bun (and I can watch one of those for hours). If you want to see a picture of what Jordan the Pirate looked like when he was younger, go to my Facebook page and see our little boy Noli. Neat kid, huh? He said it'd be okay if I shared his bedtime stories with you, so enjoy.

Early life as a military brat gave me a deep appreciation of nomadic lifestyles, a combined wariness of and respect for authority, and close-up insights into the warrior mentality and its manifestations, all of which influence my work to a very discernible degree. Later years in academia and abroad furthered my ongoing study of human nature at its best and worst. My writing examines the essence and nature of good and evil and love and hatred, especially when those entities and emotions mesh, collide, or transubstantiate.

A Singularly Unsuitable Word by Mary Anna Evans A Singularly Unsuitable Word by Mary Anna Evans Mar. 06, 2010 $0.99 4730 words Sample 50%
Author bio:
Mary Anna Evans has degrees in physics and engineering, but her heart is in the past. Her series character, Faye Longchamp, lives the exciting life of an archaeologist, and Mary Anna envies her a little. Her novels have received recognitions including a spot on Voice of Young America's (VOYA) list of "Adult Mysteries with Young Adult Appeal." They have been on the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association's (IMBA) bestseller list and have been designated Notable Books by Booksense and Indiebound. Mary Anna has won the Florida Historical Society's Patrick D. Smith Florida Literature Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and a Florida Book Awards Bronze Medal. Her books have been nominated for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year and for the SIBA Book Award. While Mary Anna's novels are written with adults in mind, they have found an audience in schools, where they're being used to teach non-literature subjects such as social studies, math, and science. The social studies link was no surprise to the books' author, since her protagonist is an archaeologist, but she swears that she never once purposely included math or science in her stories. (And her readers have never once complained that the laws of physics operate properly in her books). Learning that she's done this unconsciously has been an inarguable example of the axiom that writers write about who they are. They can't help it. Math and science explain the world, so they're indispensable to any story set in that world. And they're very handy tools for an amateur detective to have. To invite Mary Anna to speak by telephone to your book group or class, email her at maryannaevans@yahoo.com . Mary Anna is a co-founder and board member of the Anhinga Writers' Studio. The Studio presents an annual summer workshop in Gainesville, Florida, providing writing instruction and networking for fiction and nonfiction authors of all levels of experience.
